Somewhat Daily Happenings of an Intern Architect

8.10.2006

I am going to end up getting fired.

I have never worked for a man who frustrated me more. I find myself either literally biting my tongue to keep from lashing out, or allowing my frustration to slowly seep out into my responses to him. Luckily, it is not just me that finds his actions irritating. I often get “looks” from our office manager, too. At least I am not alone.

What, you may ask, could cause such a levelheaded girl, such as myself, to want to tear someone a new one? It is hard to point to just one thing. It seems it is an accumulation of events over the course of a day or week that just takes me to the brink. I honestly think the old man is going batty. So, what is my solution? Try to figure out how he wants things done before I do them in order to eliminate future lashings. This battiness, coupled with his son’s (the VP of the firm) inability to pass on information, makes me think that, if I don’t get fired, I will go crazy. This is a test. I am getting good at spotting tests because it seems I have had many of them in my recent life. I will learn something from this, I just don’t know what yet. Patience, young one.

It may also teach you a little bit of confrontation. You might consider talking to the VP about his inability to relay info.

Yes, what do you have to lose by being assertive, not confrontational...just direct? How do other employees handle this situation? I think that men in leadership expect us "gals" to defer to them and follow. I tend to think we need to be professional, yet direct. I am reading a great book called, "Play Like a Man, Win like a Woman". It is opening my eyes about the differences in men and women at work, our roles and how we see our careers. Very eye opening!

Remember your 'happy place'? Try and go there. That's what I TRY and do when someone at work drives me crazy. You know who.

won't know for another month. I don't have too much faith that I passed this one. Oh well, worst case-I try again in February.
